  • Description: You've got two choices. Ignore the story and have mario sound effects. In which case use normal SMF2. If you want the story use the **BOTTOM** hack here:

Each stage is 1 screen large and checkpoints are given regularly. Note that some places may lead to an immediate death when entering. However it isn't a troll because these places either have warnings before them or are directly after a checkoint, meaning no progress is lost lel. Play with the volume on and direct any cheeses or queries to me on discord first.

Story: 10/40

This story is quite unique... in its own way. I just can't see how the title and the level content connect with each other, and that proves why telling the story by voice becomes a double edged sword: it gains points for creativity but it just makes it even more confusing for the player to focus when playing the level. And even with everything you're saying to Mario, it feels like it's just a narrator that tells him what to do. "Mario and God" immediately signals that it's gonna be something like other worldly but it ends up being just a set of challenge trials. I know this was a mouthful but I just couldn't review this category in a shorter way.

Atmosphere: 5/25

Just like story, I just fail to see how any of the layouts in every map connect with the story and the mood itself. It's just a collection of mish-mashed scenery and tiles through the whole screen. The voice narrating also takes away the chance to offer immersion by audio. A complete missed opportunity.

General: 15/35

At least you tried to offer unique sets of challenges through every map. Now, there's a difference between challenge and fun and then challenging but frustrating as hell. Unfortunately, this is the latter. Every step you take in every single map is a matter of trial and error, taking away any desire to retry the level over and over. I'm not sure about you but this is not the definition of fun for anyone, unless maybe some masochist.

I'm not sure where I can possibly begin, but it feels like I had a lot of my life sucked out of my after playing this level, which sometimes is a good thing but I'm afraid I can't say that here. The story was just a mess to me, and unfortunately the narration didn't work out for me. You had to use a hack which cancelled the sound effects, for starters, which doesn't make you feel part of the game. Perhaps you wanted it to be all eerie that way, but the way the narration was often awkwardly cut off was very bothersome and also it didn't feel like you really cared when you were reading your script (assuming you had one planned).
The atmosphere was where I can be a bit more generous in this review. Yeah, I didn't like the lack of sound effects being part of the level. Yeah, I didn't like the messy combinations of tiles across the 20 different maps, which should in theory have prevented this as you could use as many themes as you wanted, but you still had plenty of clashes which didn't work. Despite this, I can say that the journey of not knowing when it will all end was pretty much nailed. I spent far too long trying to clear the level when we consider it was for a contest, but ignoring that for now, that part of the atmosphere was good. There were also a few maps which had a very good individual theme, as opposed to others which were just a mess.
As for the rest... no, is how I would sum it up. I am limiting my score here very harshly as you were told not to make levels of this difficulty. This could easily have been disqualified for such difficulty, but I did eventually beat it after, what, 20 hours? All the precision challenges are generally not a smart challenge idea either way. I have also touched upon the messy tiling combinations in previous sections, which can affect your score for the general level too. I just didn't enjoy playing this level, and I played it for much longer than I should have had to as a contest judge.

As for story... i liked the fact you actually took your time to narrate everything with your voice, making it into the custom music, but boy... erm... your voice isn't nice to listen to and i had to listen to it on loop while dying, making it very difficult to track the story and plain annoying... the story told wasnt even that good... you go places and send god to earth. The jokes inbetween were very distasteful and the overal silence your voice had to it killed the game for me to be honest.

Atmosphere was quite well, you depicted the place the story took place well. It wasn't too touching with the silence over your voice though which killed the mood you were trying to set over your atmosphere. The tiling was quite distasteful to look at here n there, including semisolids made solid, but overal... the atmosphere wasn't that terrible.

Level in General
Oh... well, i liked you giving checkpoints, but why not every map? the gameplay was fairly precise and really repetitive. I kept getting the same parts of your words stuck in my head "ah just got ya there didnt i?", some rain lyrics and well... it was very obstructive to the tedious gameplay. I didn't enjoy playing this, i felt like i was wasting my time despite your unique setups and extremely wide space usage. The entry felt like it dragged out for way too long, so i can't give you much for this level in general.

I've mixed feelings with how you went about the osp approach. On one hand you've thrown in an abundance of fresh ideas and on the other hand it relies a bit heavily on confined spaces to produce obstacles of higher difficulty thus detaining the enjoyability and it's for that reason that most don't bother with completing the level. I thought the jumble of themes was an odd choice and not really something I could get behind and I think it's also pretty clear that the narration/story aspect was an afterthought because you threw everything together after the level, although I'll admit for something that was improvised on the spot it wasn't bad. I found "three-cheeses" haha, get it? :P. First up was the room in the snapshot, what you do to make life easier instead of going by the books is to bounce on the cannonball and over the ceiling and you're in. The other one was the key cheese where we're supposed to get the key to hold off the spineys but then you sloped the ground and so you've successfully negated the purpose of the challenge. There was a third cheese but I don't quite remember which one either because I have bad memory or it wasn't significant enough to acknowledge. I don't think I mentioned that thing with the orange pipe in the desert map- nevermind just did and I'd assume the big rhino was the root cause but in any case it should be something to steer clear of if you see something like that. And in reality there's not much left to say, obviously the highlight was the gameplay and there's a lot of ingenuity involved with the setups.
